A profile determination trial toward national and local competitions between 2000-2008

This thesis aims to introduce a methodological research on analyzing competition environment and also giving an approach toward competitions profiles to architects specially young architects via the information about the competitions which were organized through recent years. We hope that this research could help young architects to progress their projects in well defined methods.Being aware of importance of the architectural competitions in all countries and also in Turkey in the stage of obtaining the required project and applying it, the general characteristics of the national and local competitions organized by Turkish corporation, and institutions between 2000 and 2008 was investigated. To answer this question, firstly the components of the competitions in general were investigated. The components are set to be: 1) the competition regulations, 2) profile of the competition environment, 3) competition conditions (specifications) and 4) the architects? opinions.Based on the regulation of the competitions and also comparing with an alternative regulations the Britain and Turkey cases have been studied both together. Then, based on these components the state of the competitions in Turkey between 2000 and 2008 is tried to be determined. The related documents about the competitions have been obtained from ?Arkitera? website and ?The Chamber of Architects of Turkey?, and the ?Mimarlik? journal?s volumes from 2000 to 20008 was searched and classified. At the next stage, the competition conditions which determines the rules of the competitions and is known to be one of the most important documents were investigated. The investigation was started with a presumption of inadequacy in regulations and also required documents from participants. In order to find probable answers the regulations of the ?structure? competitions between 2000 and 2008 was investigated using the ?content analysis? method. Finally, as another component of the competitions, to take advantage of the experiences of the competitors and jury members, the problems and questions extracted from the result of the previous sections are discussed with numbers of competitors and jury members in the competitions during these years. The results of the interviews are analyzed using the ?grounded theory?. All analyses between 2000 and 2008 years has introduced the problems of the competition environments as follows:1.The small number of competitors,2.The preference of private sector in accepting offers instead of entering competitions,3.The lack of transparency in regulations and also some inadequacies in informations,4.The inefficiency of the general conference in reaching the fundamental goals of the competitions,5.Incomplete jury reports during the assessment stage.
