The social democracy debates in the Birikim magazine in the 2000s

In this study, debates of Birikim Dergisi which oriented social democracy in the 2000s are discussed. Social democracy has reached the present day by the support of different sources wherefrom its existence. Besides, it remains as an on-going thought and preserves its presence. Especially, with globalization, the course of social democracy has dramatically changed, and several debates come along through the Third Way approach. Birikim Dergisi, which describes itself as a "monthly socialist culture magazine' attain an essential place in the left-thought in Turkey. Also, some debates are written from the left-perspective in some current situations. Furthermore, specific debates directed to social democracy can manifest themselves in Birikim Dergisi. "What is social democracy? How has developed social democracy in Turkey?", "What are Birikim Dergisi's opinions and thoughts on social democracy?" and "How are the debates on social democracy manifested in Birikim Dergisi in the 2000s?" were determined as research questions in the study. Firstly the theory of social democracy and its position in Turkey tried to be explained in the present study. Then, the establishment and aims of Birikim Dergisi are brought into the open to clarify the thoughts on social democracy of leading names of the magazine. Finally, the evaluations which take place in the scope of some defined titles of social democracy in Birikim Dergisi in the 2000s are analyzed. The main purpose of this study is to expose these discussions, how are they debated by the authors, and analyzing the authors' perspectives on social democracy. As a result of the study, it was concluded the evaluations on social democracy are various. Particularly in the political field, the fundamental values of social democracy and Third Way practices are defended too. Nevertheless, the Third Way is critically approached in the economic field. Literature review and document analysis were used in the method of the study.
