Abstract (EN)
This study examines the representations of masculinity in films by female directors and screenwriters in Turkish cinema between 2013 and 2023, analyzing how cinema reproduces social norms and gender roles. While cinema legitimizes dominant practices by transforming social realities into an aesthetic form, the contributions of female directors provide a foundation for the development of critical and alternative perspectives on masculinity representations. This study evaluates the portrayals of masculinity in films such as Köksüz (Nobody's Home), Fakat Müzeyyen Bu Derin Bir Tutku (But Müzeyyen, That Deep Longing), Tereddüt (Clair Obscur), Bilmemek (Something Useful), and Suna within the context of patriarchal structures and gender inequality. While female directors question masculinity norms and reveal the contradictions of hegemonic masculinity, some films also demonstrate the reproduction of these norms. The study highlights the potential of cinema to raise awareness about gender equality while also drawing attention to the limitations of systemic critiques. These findings suggest that strengthening the role of female directors in cinema will contribute to the development of more inclusive and critical narratives.
