Evaluation of physical characteristics and technical performance of taekwondo athletes competing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games according to their weight categories

Aim: Examining the physical characteristics of Taekwondo players competing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, the techniques they apply according to the rounds, the GJ penalties they receive, and their IVR status. Material/Methods: Demographic characteristics of the Olympic athletes and the techniques they use were analyzed according to the medals and match-winning status of the athletes, the weights they competed in, and their gender. Analysis of variance, Friedman, Kruskall-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U test was applied according to the normal distribution of the data fot the differences between the groups. Post Hoc analysis was performed for the technical differences between the weights. Linear regression analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between ranking scores. Results: The medal winners were younger, the WTR and WTGS quotas received more medals, the medal winners and the match winners applied techniques more frequently, the direct kick to the trunk techniques were applied more frequently in all weight categories and the most frequently used in the third rounds. Rotational techniques are the least used, men apply rotational techniques relatively more frequently than women, IVR trainer requests are mostly experienced in the third round and most of them are rejected, and GJ penalties given by the referees are mostly given in the third rounds. Conclusion: Rotational techniques are the least used techniques in all matches, the athletes who win the matches and receive medals displayed an active fight by applying techniques more frequently in, they received less GJ penalties, and IVR requests is accepted more.
