Abstract (EN)

The Ottoman Empire has been renowned for its considerable influence and importance throughout history. To comprehend the history of this formidable state and analyse its social, cultural and economic structures, it is necessary to utilise population registers, which are invaluable sources for historians. The first modern census in the Ottoman Empire, considered the earliest of its kind, was conducted in 1830-1831. The resulting population registers are of great importance to historical research, providing extensive information on the demographic, economic and sociological structures of their respective periods. These registers provide insight into the administrative structure of the region, the names of settlements, the distinctive physical characteristics of individuals, including the shape and colour of beards and moustaches, names and nicknames, ages, approximate heights, heads of households and their degrees of kinship, the number of males and their military status, taxpayers, dates of birth and death, and population movements. The Property District population register contains data from the 1834 records. The transcriptions of the records pertaining to the Muslim population within this register have been completed. For the purposes of clarity and ease of comprehension, the content has been organised into tables and graphs, with the objective of elucidating the history of the region and serving as a valuable resource for future studies of population registers.
