Adaptation to 21st century library design and functionality: a librarian's perspective of libraries in state universities established after 2006

This thesis aims to evaluate the architectural and service transformation of state university libraries in Turkey in line with 21st-century library design criteria, from the perspective of librarians. With the impact of digitalization, technological advancements, and evolving user expectations, university libraries have moved beyond being mere spaces for information access and now require redefinition as flexible, user-centered "third places" that support social interaction. A quantitative research method was adopted, and data were collected through a structured questionnaire. The survey was administered to librarians working in the libraries of state universities established in 2006 and beyond. The findings indicate that while university libraries have made certain progress in transforming into useroriented, multifunctional, and socially engaging spaces, significant obstacles such as budget constraints, staff shortages, and deficiencies in technological infrastructure continue to hinder this transformation. This study demonstrates the need for a holistic approach—encompassing physical, managerial, and technological dimensions—for university libraries to adapt effectively to the demands of the digital age. The contribution of this research to the literature lies in its assessment of Turkish university libraries' compliance with contemporary design standards from the viewpoint of library professionals and its quantitative analysis of how 21st-century design principles are reflected in practice. By emphasizing the importance of incorporating librarians' experiences into decision-making processes, the study offers an original and practical value.
