Abstract (EN)
The earthquake that occurred on 24 May 2014 off the Gökçeada and whose magnitude was measured as Mw = 6.5 was felt in a large area in the Aegean and Marmara regions, especially in Çanakkale, Edirne, Istanbul, Izmir, Balikesir. In the first two days after this earthquake with a duration of approximately 42 seconds, 405 aftershocks with magnitudes between 1 and 5.3 were recorded. According to the focal mechanism solutions made by various institutions, it is understood that the earthquake was produced by a strike-slip fault, which is the extension of the northern branch of the NAF (North Anatolian Fault) within the Aegean sea. Acceleration values of 153.03 gal in the NS component, 179.33 gal in the EW component and 123.51 gal in the vertical component were measured, at an average of 50 km from the upper center of the earthquake. In this earthquake with a focal depth of approximately 23 km, the maximum horizontal ground accelerations are below the estimated values. Although the earthquake is deeply focused and felt from a wide geography, it is seen that the fault rupture exhibits a forward directional effect at the stations of Çanakkale-Central, Çanakkale-Central-2 and Gelibolu, which are located in the direction of rupture, due to the frequency values calculated between 0.6 Hz and 9 Hz. On the other hand, considering that the calculated period values have a very wide spectrum of 0.1 - 5 s, the most important reason for the low level of structural damage can be shown that the earthquake occurred deep.
