Rural settlements relocated in the central district (Elazığ) after the 24 Hanuary 2020 Sivrice (Elazığ) earthquake

This thesis comprehensively examines the displacement processes in rural settlements of Elazığ province following the January 24, 2020 Sivrice (Elazığ) earthquake. The study delves into the social, economic, and environmental impacts of post-disaster resettlement processes in detail. It was determined that displacement decisions were shaped based on factors such as geological suitability, safety criteria, and access to natural resources. The research revealed that 25 rural settlements were relocated based on criteria such as distance to fault lines and ground stability. However, traditional lifestyles and social bonds of the communities were not adequately considered during this process, negatively affecting social and economic adaptation. Challenges faced by displaced communities in economic activities like agriculture and livestock farming were highlighted, and it was found that infrastructure deficiencies and problems in accessing social services reduced individuals' quality of life. Another significant finding of the study is the sense of longing for former living areas and the psychological difficulties encountered during adaptation to new settlements. Despite a heightened sense of security, the lack of psychosocial support mechanisms weakened the resilience of communities in the post-disaster period. The study emphasizes the importance of fostering community participation, supporting economic activities, improving infrastructure, and long-term planning to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of resettlement processes. The findings provide a roadmap for policies that can be implemented in future disaster scenarios. Keywords: Elâzığ, Displacement, Disaster
