Population is defined as the total number of people who live in a certain period of time and a certain geographic area in the world. Today, one of the main issues that countries in the world have been examining is the population.Archival documents are the primary sources while the history of the Ottoman Empire is examined. Since the population registries in the archival documents also covers the elements of people, place and time together, they are indispensable in enlightening the history of the cities and their socio-demographic characteristics.Cadastral record books and tax registry books (Extraordinary Tax in Ottoman Empire) enregistered before the 19th century weren't kept for demographic purposes. The main unit in those cadastral record was the household unit which would pay the taxes. The modern population censuses were began to hold in the 19th century in the Ottoman Empire. In the census records, the information about a person's name, nickname, father's name, age, physical characteristics, occupation, the official or religious status were included. This study aims to examine the registry of Mardin District registered with the number of 3736, which is available in the population registry of the Prime Ministry Ottoman Archive. In this study, we will be able to obtain the opportunity to learn first-hand information about the population and population movements of Muslim and non-muslim communities residing in Mardin District in 1835, along with the names of the officers and the titles they use, migration and transfers. In addition, there are significant details in regional historiography such as local governments in the region; headmen, imams, the disabled, human occupations and physical properties.
