Abstract (EN)

Population is one of the most important source that can describe the state of a country or a region. In the past, as today, state administrators wanted to have information about the people under their rule. The Ottoman Empire made censuses with various tools and purposes in many regions, such as theise study examined. Tahrir or avarız records can be given as an example. Although the aims of today are partially similar, the investigations made in the previous periods were made due to the country's commitment to soldiers, taxes and agriculture. The Mardin Muslim Population Register, examined in this thesis, was prepared in 1845 in order to reveal the Muslim population of Mardin Sanjak in the Ottoman Empire. In this register, we can access to information such as the physical characteristics, professions, nicknames and age of the people together with the family members of the people. The census does not include information on women or non-Muslim subjects, as it only includes Muslim men. With this study, it reveals the neighborhood, number of male population and density of Muslims living in Mardin city.
