Evaluation of 4th and 5th grade social studies course books in terms of language and expression

Abstract (EN)
In this research, Social Studies 4th and 5th grade textbooks taught in schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education in 2018-2019 academic year were examined in terms of language and expression. The aim of the study was to determine whether the textbooks were prepared in a functional way and to determine the deficiencies of the textbooks in terms of language and expression. As a result of this examination, it was determined that punctuation marks were generally used in accordance with class level. In the use of punctuation marks, f (11) mistakes were found in the 4th grade Social Studies textbook and f (11) mistakes were found in the 5th grade Social Studies textbook. It was determined that spelling mistakes were made too much in the 5th grade Social Studies textbook f (60), and in the 4th grade Social Studies textbook f (6) spelling mistakes were made. It was determined that more mistakes were made in the 5th grade Social Studies textbook than the 4th grade Social Studies textbook regarding the structure and expression of the sentences. In the 4th grade Social Studies textbook, the words of foreign language origin are given more place than the 5th grade Social Studies textbook. In order to make the narrative simple and understandable, errors were found in the books in terms of not using the expressions of the same meaning. In the 2019-2020 academic year, the textbooks examined were also taught in schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education and it was observed that the same mistakes were repeated in new editions.
