Reflections of practice of 4MAT education model by elementary school mathematic teachers

Constructivist approach which has been effective in the field of education in our country since 2004 brought along many new education models. What is expected from teachers is to apply these models effectively in their classes. One of these models is 4MAT education model which has undoubtedly been mentioned and studied mostly in recent years. The aim of this study is to reflect practice process of 4MAT education model of elementary level mathematic teachers. The study in which special case study was used was carried out with 3 elementary level mathematical teachers who have different occupational experience. ?4MAT Education Model Practice Observation Form?, diaries of teachers, semi-structured interview and intermediate interviews were used as data collection tools.Descriptive analysis was done for data obtained in-class observations; 4MAT model application processes of teachers were supported with diaries of teachers with observations and intermediate interviews. As a result of the study, semi-structured interview was done in order to put forward views of teachers about 4MAT education model. Data obtained from the interview was evaluated with content analysis. When the observation form composed for each quarter of 4MAT was analyzed, it was seen in the first quarter that teachers could not efficiently answer the question ?Why I am learning?? which is raised in the mind of students; for the second quarter teachers do not carry out adequate activity while making students comprehend the subject and do not make use of different materials; in the third quarter they do not use in-class individual/group projects; in the fourth quarter teachers do not provide education program which is necessary for creating new plans/experiences from their own experiences. Views of teachers following 4MAT application process were positive; teachers made different suggestions in order to apply model more efficiently and have the required success from these practices.
