Abstract (EN)

In this thesis study, a novel 5-phase segment-type switched reluctance motor (ST-SRM) with 10/8 pole configuration has been designed and produced. The designed ST-SRM includes a stator having evenly spaced salient poles and a rotor having segmental U-type cores which are embedded in aluminum block. The operation of ST-SRM depends on exciting two adjacent phases respectively at all times by creating short flux loops. The performance characteristics of the designed prototype are investigated by finite element method (FEM). The design and simulation principles considered while designing electrical machines, are applied to conventional SRM and designed ST-SRM, respectively. The ST-SRM having foregoing structure and phase excitation scheme substantially provides 2,10 times more output torque than a same-sized conventional SR motor. As a result, it is proved that the novel SRM is superior among the criterias used in comparison such as output torque, total weight and unit power density and the purposed model is particularly well suited for high torque and weight constrained applications like aerospace and military applications.Key Words : Segmental rotor, two-phase excitation, switching.
