Students' and teachers? views about the acquestion process of responsibility, estethetic and sensiitivity values to naturel environment in the pirimary school 5th grade social sciences program

This study aims to investigate primary school fifth grade students? acqusitions of responsibility, aesthetic and sensitivity values to the natural environment according to students? and teachers? views.The scanning model was used in the research study. Research population includes 2942 fifth grade students from 28 primary school in Istanbul, Çekmeköy and 79 teachers who work at those primary schools. The sample group was selected as 199 fifth grade students and 61 teachers from 28 primary school in Istanbul, Çekmeköy.In order to achieve the goal of the study, data were collected using ?Students? Views Questionnaire for Acquisition of Responsibility, Aesthetic and Sensitivity Values to Natural Environment in Primary School 5th Grade Social Sciences Lesson? which is developed for students and ?Teachers? Views Questionnaire for Acquisition of Responsibility, Aesthetic and Sensitivity Values to Natural Environment in Primary School 5th Grade Social Sciences Lesson? which is developed for teachers. Collected data were analyzed using statistical method of ?numbers and percentages?.At the end of the study, majority of the students indicated that they believe that their teachers? behaviours are appropriate with the values of responsibility, aesthetic and sensitivity to natural environment and they believe that they have such values. Students also indicated that although necessary explanations related to values of responsibility, aesthetic and sensitivity to natural environment are provided to them, there are not enough activities that focus on applications of such values. Additionally, students explained that the family is the most important factor in development of the values and teachers, social sciences lessons, friends and social environment are the other important factors respectively. Students also indicated that they evaluate their teachers? behaviours related with the values of responsibility, aesthetic and sensitivity to natural environment using mainly observation and interview approaches.Teachers expressed that it is appropriate to include the values of responsibility, aesthetic and sensitivity to natural environment in the primary school, fifth grade social sciences lesson and selected unit for this topic is suitable for the target values of that unit. On the other hand, teachers think that course book, teacher?s guide book and student?s work book are insufficiant for value acquisition process. It has been found out that majority of the teachers use an approach to explain the value itself while they are teaching the values to the students, however they use those approaches mainly during the process of responsibility acquisition. The study results show that the teachers use various materials such as performance and project works of the students or question and answer method while they are teaching those values. The teachers participated in the study exhibit positive attitude about their own behaviours and approaches towards the students during the value acquisition process. The study indicates that the teachers and the parents aren?t interested enough whether or not their children have acquired the basic values at school. On the other side, the teachers state that they have exhibited appropriate behaviours and provide students with the proper classroom environment helpful for the acquisition of the values of responsibility, aesthetic and sensitivity to natural environment. The study indicates that the students believe that they mostly exhibit appropriate behaviours as part of the values of responsibility, aesthetic and sensitivity to natural environment while they are together with elder people, however they believe that they don?t likely exhibit such behaviours when they are alone. During the value acquisition process, most of the teachers are inclined to use observation and interview techniques.In conclusion, the study reveals that both the teachers and the students have positive views in relation to the acquisiton of the values of responsibility, aesthetic and sensitivity to natural environment during the social sciences lessons and at the level of fifth grade, however there are some deficiencies and problems in implementations of the process.Keywords: Value education, responsibility, aesthetic, sensitivity to the natural environment, primary education, social sciences lesson at schools.
