The effect of a sensory-based mathematics education program on supporting the mathematical skills of 60-72 months old children

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is the examination of the effect of Multi-sensory-Based Preschool Mathematics Education Program Supporting Mathematical Skills on the mathematical skills of children attending preschool education. Study group of this research consists of children between the ages of 5 and 6 (60-72 months) studying in 2 foundation/private kindergartens located in Antalya city center. In the study, it was used the pretest-posttest control group model, one of the experimental models. Quantitative data collection methods were used in the study. In the study, Child-Family Information Form, which was developed by the researcher as a data collection tool and includes questions on demographic characteristics of the children participating in the study, their attendance status of preschool education, family and parent characteristics, was used as a data collection tool and Tools for Early Assessment in Math (TEAM), developed by Sarama and Clements (2011) and adapted to Turkish by the researcher, was used to measure children's mathematical skills. TR-TEAM, the Turkish version of the TEAM assessment tool, was applied to the experimental and control groups in order to measure the mathematical skills of the children in the pre-application. Following the pre-application, the "Sensory-Based Preschool Mathematics Education Program Supporting Mathematical Skills " that was prepared by the researcher and consists of 24 activities was applied as 2 sessions per week for 12 weeks. Upon completion of the application of program, TR-TEAM was reapplied to the children in both groups and the final application was performed. The data obtained were analysed by the SPSS 25 program. Analysis results revealed that Sensory-Based Preschool Mathematics Education Program Supporting Mathematical Skills has a positive effect on children's mathematical skills at the end of the training provided.
