Evaluation of preoperative nutrition in three different scales in patients 65 years and over

This study was conducted to evaluate the preoperative nutritional status of patients aged 65 and over, to determine the factors affecting nutrition, and to compare the effectiveness of the three scales used in evaluation. The research is cross-sectional and correlational. The sample of our study included 200 elderly patients who were in the preoperative period in the surgical services. Data were obtained using patient identification information form, Mini Nutritional Assessment Test-Short Form (MNA-SF), Nutritional Risk Score Form (NRS 2002), Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI). We used to evaluate the study data Chi-square, correlation, regression, kappa and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis. In our study, elderly patients; according to MNA-SF 35.0%, NRS-2002 35% and GNRI 39.5% were found to be risky in terms of preoperative nutrition. When the preoperative sociodemographic characteristics of the elderly patients were compared with the scales, there was a statistically significant relationship between the scales and the place of residence, income level, age, marital status (p= .000). When the scales and the factors affecting nutrition are compared, there is a statistically significant relationship between dysgea, loss of appetite, main meal and non-meal snack consumption (p= ,000). Considering the compatibility of the scales, the kappa score varies between 0.408 and 0.688. NRS 2002 and GNRI had the same sensitivity of 88.3% in all patients. When the sensitivities of the scales were evaluated, the highest value belonged to the NRS 2002 and GNRI scales (88.3%). However, since it is difficult to evaluate GNRI in the clinical setting, the use of NRS 2002 is considered appropriate.
