A research aiming to develop the lexicology of 7th grade students by moving the unkown words in Turkish course book

This research aiming to develop the lexicology of grade 7 students is consisted of the steps below: first of all, the unknown words in the reading and listening sections of grade 7 Turkish course books were determined. These unknown words were compared to the words in student workbook and teacher?s book of Turkish course and then it was checked if the unknown words were repeated in the texts and activities in the course book or not. Turkish course book authors were interviewed and the ways and strategies determining the words used in vocabulary studies were proposed. Lastly, Turkish teachers were interviewed to indicate how vocabulary studies were performed in class.In the research, grade 7 Turkish course books belonging to Ministry of Education publication and Koza publishing have been used. 405 students randomly selected from the two schools located in Ankara and İzmir where the course books have been studied make the research group.The students were requested to read the comprehension and listening texts in Turkish course books and the unknown words in these texts were detected by this way. The detected words were compared to the words appearing in word study sections and it was checked if the words in word study sections had been repeated in some other word study sections of the book. It was concluded that the words in word study sections had not been systematically and deliberately repeated.Turkish teachers were asked about how they studied vocabulary in class and it was concluded that they were stick to the course book when they studied vocabulary in class rather than using a variety of books and resources.It was also inquired how Turkish course book authors determined the vocabulary lists for the course books by the help of the interviews made with course book authors.In conclusion, the ways and strategies suggested teaching vocabulary in course books, the criteria that course book authors use to determine the vocabulary in course books, and the ways teachers use to teach vocabulary show that an organized and predetermined vocabulary teaching strategy and policy are severely required.
