The examination of the effect of cartoon and lexis matrix techniques on academic success and attitude in 9th and 11th grade english lesson

The aim of this study is to determine the effects on students' academic success and attitudes by using cartoons and lexis matrix in the ninth grade English lesson "Invitations and Celebrations" and "Television and Social Media" units and the "Friends" and "Values and Norms" units in the eleventh grade. The research is arranged in mixed method and experimental design and includes pre-test and post-test experiment-control groups. The group of the study consists of the students of a high school in Çay in the spring semester of the 2020-2021 academic year. The research was conducted with a total of 77 students,13 of 9th graders and 19 of 11th graders in the experimental group and 12 of 9th graders and 33 of 11th graders in the control group. The research was carried out in 1 month for each unit, 2 months in total. While the lessons were taught with cartoon and lexis matrix techniques in the experimental group, the lessons were taught with traditional methods with the control group. Unit achievement tests developed by the researcher, were used to measure the academic success of the students in English lessons. In order to measure the students' attitudes towards the English course, 'Attitude Towards English Lesson Scale' developed by Takkaç Tulgar (2018) was used. The findings obtained from the research were analyzed with the SPSS program. Pre and post interviews were held with the students, the interviews were divided into code themes and the validity and reliability were confirmed with the co-coder. The researcher recorded his observations in the teacher's diary throughout the process. At the end of the study, significant differences were found in academic achievement levels and attitudes towards English course between the experimental and control groups. In the interviews with the students and the examinations in the teacher's diary, it was understood that the techniques were useful both in increasing the academic success of the students and in changing their attitudes in a positive way.
