The effect of simulation training on the self-confidence and application skills of emergency service residents about surgical cricothyrotomy

In this study, the aim is to investigate the effect of surgical cricothyrotomy simulation training on the self-confidence of resident physicians. Surgical cricothyrotomy is a critical procedure in medical emergencies, and it is essential for doctors to confidently perform this skill as it can be a matter of life and deat. In the research, resident doctors working in our emergency department were directed to descriptive questionnaire items containing their demographic information and pre-test assessment questions measuring their knowledge and confidence levels regarding surgical cricothyrotomy. Subsequently, verbal and visual training was provided. Each resident received practical training on the animal model we created and had the opportunity to practice the procedure on a mannequin at least once. After the training, "Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS)" was used to assess the procedure's duration and steps, and finally, they were asked to fill out a post-test evaluation form. When the pre-training and post-training evaluations were examined, it was determined that participants' knowledge level and confidence in surgical airway management increased after the training. Furthermore, a negative relationship was found between the procedure duration and the results of "Direct Observation of Procedural Skills" (DOPS), and a positive relationship was detected between post-training evaluation averages and pre-training evaluation averages. The results indicate that surgical cricothyrotomy simulation training helps doctors learn and apply this critical skill. This training enables doctors to approach emergencies with more confidence, potentially contributing to better patient care. This study emphasizes the importance of simulation in surgical education and recommends surgical cricothyrotomy simulation training as an educational method that supports doctors in learning critical skills. Moreover, it encourages consideration of this topic, as such training can enhance doctors' self-confidence and improve patient safety.
