The effect of burnout levels on job satisfaction in emergency service workers

Nowadays, health services play an indispensable role for the welfare and quality of life of societies. Health professionals contribute to the protection of public health by undertaking critical tasks such as saving, improving, and sustaining patients' lives. Job satisfaction is a concept that reflects an individual's level of satisfaction with their job and emotional fulfillment while performing their work duties. However, healthcare personnel, especially emergency service workers, may experience decreased job satisfaction due to stress factors and high levels of burnout. The main purpose of this study is to examine the effect of burnout levels of emergency service workers on their job satisfaction. The study included 183 emergency service employees working in the center and districts of Tokat province in 2016 and 2023. Demographic information was gathered from the participants, who were then requested to fill out the Maslach Burnout Scale and Minnesota Job Satisfaction Scale. Statistical analyses were performed in SPSS 22 software. Mean, standard deviation, median, minimum and maximum measurements, independent sample t test, ANOVA, Tukey, LSD and Tamhane's T2 post-hoc tests were used to evaluate the data. The level of significance (Alpha) accepted for all statistical analyses in our study was 0.05. The study involved 183 emergency service workers, with 92 being male and 91 being female. When analyzing the age distribution of the participants, it was found that 44 individuals were aged 18-25, 86 were aged 26-35, and 53 were 36 years old or above. It was found that many parameters such as age, gender, marital status, and income status were statistically significant in influencing burnout and job satisfaction. Burnout levels were higher among emergency service workers who lacked enjoyment in their profession, leading to lower job satisfaction. Statistical analysis revealed a negative correlation between burnout and job satisfaction. Burnout levels are a significant concern for individuals in the healthcare sector and this study helped us to understand how much emergency service workers are affected in this challenging working environment. Such research can enhance the work environment for healthcare professionals in the emergency department and help provide them with better support. We believe our study will offer a crucial foundation for enhancing comprehension of the emergency department staff's role in the healthcare sector and for directing future research.
