Determining the relationship between emergency service nurse's levels of self-compatibility and care behaviors

Nursing care is the most important determinant of patient satisfaction in health services. The basis of nursing care is to be compassionate. However, it is not possible for nurses to show compassionate behavior to others without showing compassion for themselves. Self-compassion is related to psychological variables affecting nursing care and affects the quality of care. In this study, it was aimed to determine the relationship between the self-compassion levels and care behaviors of nurses working in the emergency department. The sample of the study consisted of 469 nurses, 344 women and 125 men. The data of the study were collected using the nurses' Introductory Characteristics Form, the Short Form of Self-Compassion Questionnaire, and the Care Behaviors Scale-24. As a result of the normality tests of the data, Student's t test was used for comparisons with two groups, and Anova test was used for comparisons with 3 or more groups. 0.005 was used as the level of significance, and it was stated that there was a significant difference in case of p<0.005, and no significant difference in case of p>0.005. According to the findings obtained from the scales, the self-compassion scores of the nurses were found to be moderate, and the total scores of caring behaviors were found to be high, and the highest predictor of the level of caring behaviors was found to be the average score of the knowledge and skill sub-dimension. When the nurses' self-compassion was evaluated according to their introductory characteristics; It was determined that having siblings, socio-economic status, working years in the profession, working years in the emergency department, the way of working in the institution and being satisfied with being a nurse affected the self-compassion levels at a statistically significant level. Again, when the care behaviors of nurses are evaluated according to their introductory characteristics; marital status, having children, having siblings, socio-economic status, years of working in the profession, years of working in the emergency department, working style in the institution, satisfaction with being a nurse, and reading any publications related to nursing / nursing care in the last five years were determined that the status of the nurses affected the care behaviors of the nurses at a statistically significant level. In this study, a moderately significant positive correlation was determined between the level of self-compassion and caring behaviors. The results of the research show that self-compassion is an important predictor of nurses' care behaviors and their sub-dimensions of care behaviors (assurance, knowledge and skills, being respectful, commitment). Accordingly, as the self-compassion levels of nurses working in the emergency room increase, their care behaviors also increase.
