Comparison of trauma scores and prognosis of patients presenting to the emergency department due to a motorcycle accident and ın-vehicle traffic accidents

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the trauma score and prognosis of multiple trauma patients who presented to the emergency department with in-vehicle traffic accident or motorcycle accident. Method: The study was carried out in 100 cases with motor vehicle traffic accidents and 75 motorcycle accidents who applied to Manisa Celal Bayar University Medical Faculty Emergency Service with multiple trauma. ISS, AIS, GCS, prognosis and clinical features of the cases were recorded. Results: 75% of the cases in the in-vehicle traffic accident group were male, 25% were female, 94.7% of the motorcycle accident cases were male and 5.3% were female. It was found 37.85 ± 15.40 in motorcycle accident cases. The most common site of injury was found to be extremity injury with a rate of 76% in in-vehicle traffic accident cases and 74.6% in motorcycle cases. When the trauma scores are examined, the mean GCS is 13.30 +-3.56 in in-vehicle traffic accident cases and 13.0+-3.09 in motorcycle accident patients. While the ISS average was found to be 24.28+-16.69 in in-vehicle traffic accidents, it was 22.25+-17.32 in motorcycle accidents. When the Abbreviated Injury Score (AIS) was compared, it was found that 3.59 ± 1.20 in the patients with in-vehicle traffic accident and 3.40 ± 1.26 in the patients with motorcycle accident. The difference between trauma scores was not statistically significant. Surgical intervention rate was found 24% in in-vehicle traffic accident cases and 13.3% in motorcycle accident cases. Mortality was 8% in both groups of cases. Conclusion: Cases with motorcycle accident and in-vehicle traffic accident were analyzed. There was no significant difference between the two groups. This can be attributed to the short-term, single-center, and only multi-trauma patients included in the study.
