Comparison of intravenous dexketoprofen trometamol, fentanyl and paracetamol in the treatment of patients admitted to emergency service with renal colic: Randomised controlled study

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the analgesic efficacy of intravenous (IV) dexketoprofen trometamol (DKT), fentanyl and paracetamol in patients admitted to emergency service with renal colic (RC). Material and Method: The data obtained from Gaziantep University Şahinbey Research and Practice Hospital and two different state hospital emergency services between January 2016 and January 2017 were used for this study. A total of three hundred patients (n=300) who were clinically diagnosed with renal colic which confirmed by computerized tomography (CT) were included in the study. Patients' pain scores were recorded using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), at the 0th (immediately before drug administration), 15th and 30th minutes. Findings: There was no statistically significant difference between groups in terms of gender. Patients in 25-39 age group outnumbered other age groups in terms of admission with RC. In comparison of 15th minute VAS scores, the efficacy of all three groups of drugs were not superior to each other while DKT was statistically more effective than paracetamol and fentanyl in comparison of 30th minute VAS scores. There was no statistically significant difference between fentanyl and paracetamol. When the need for additional analgesia was compared with the drugs, the need for additional analgesia was found to be lower for the group with DKT administration. Based on providing complete analgesia, efficacy of DKT was statistically more significant than the other two agents. Efficacy of Fentanyl was statistically significant based on "providing moderate analgesia". Discussion and Conclusion: According to the results of our study, fentanyl provided faster analgesia than others in first fifteen minutes while analgesic activity of DKT were higher at the end of 30th minute. Based on achieving complete analgesia and reducing the need for additional analgesia, DKT was superior to the other two agents.
