Evaluation of the knowledge and skill levels of doctors and nurses working in the emergency department against disasters

Istanbul METHOD: This quantitative research was conducted with 46 nurses, 33 emergency residents, 9 emergency physicians, and a total of 88 healthcare workers. The demographic form applied included questions about age, gender, profession, year in the profession, level of education, whether or not they received training on disasters, and whether or not they were included in the disaster response team. A pre-test and post-test were administered with the supervision of a supervisor. After the pre-test, the experimental group received a 60-minute disaster training with a presentation, while the control group was not included in the training. Disaster Triage, General Disaster Approach, Hospital Disaster Plan and Incident Committee System, Bombing, Explosion, Injury and Crushing topics were given to the participants by an instructor. All participants were subjected to a study on a bomb attack scenario on the crowd dispersing after the match in the stadium. After the scenario applied on the desk, the participants were evaluated with checklists. The data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS Statistics 27 statistical program. The significance limit is p <0.05. RESULTS: Of the 88 volunteer healthcare workers who participated in our research, 52.3% were male, 47.7% were female, and 67% were between the ages of 25-30. It was determined that 43.2% of the participants in the research had a bachelor's degree, 56.7% had worked for 1-5 years, 52.3% were nurses, 59.1% had previously received disaster training, and 11.1% had previous disaster response experience. Both the pre-test and post-test mean scores of the emergency physicians and emergency residents who participated in the research were found to be higher than the mean scores of the nurses. (p<0.05). The post-test mean scores of the participants who had previously participated in disaster response were found to be higher than those who had not participated in disaster response. (p<0.05). The average post-test score (15.3250 ± 1.7303) of the group that received 1-hour disaster training prepared for the study (n=40) was found to be higher than the average post-test score (14.1875 ± 2.1403) of the group that did not receive disaster training (n=48) (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Disaster training should be added to and supported by both pre-graduate and post-graduate emergency medical personnel training.
