A study on the women and women education in Adalet Ağaoğlu's novels and dramatics

The art of literature is a discipline that describes the individual by depicting the society and the society by depicting the individual and that intends to reflect these elements with a universal perspective. In this discipline the authors actualize a reflection, a translation through characters they created.Adalet Ağaoğlu initiated a career as playwright and initially focused on drama and stepped into the world of literature by stage works. In these works, she mainly focused on themes about problems and issues concerning the family, the women and the society. Following her success in playwrights the author also achieved success in novels which she tried later. Her observation ability and her success in using different techniques and her experimental works and studies on the characteristics of language, style and wording are, among others, some of the main factors that allowed her to become one of the most remarkable authors especially in novel writing.In her works, Adalet Ağaoğlu created many women characters that are widely different from each other. Ağaoğlu studied and focused on problems of women through each of these characters. In her works, problems of women which have been a main theme focused on in our literature for long years, are dealt with and examined in detail through observations and determinations of a contemporary author by actualizing these women characters. The author, in her works in which she worked in an aesthetic and artistic detail and depicted a rich variety of characters, examined in detail the problems of suppressed women in family life or in social life, intellectual women, power conflicts in man-woman relations, and social, political and historical transformation of women.Ağaoğlu gives clues about the situation and position of women in the society through literary texts. The author questions the problems of women using these clues and indications and at the same time also causes these problems to be questioned.Ağaoğlu attaches utmost importance to the education of women, and this is probably one of the main reasons that she deserves to be recognized as one of the most remarkable authors and why she should be carefully examined. She materializes in the characters that she created that education is one of the most important ways that allows women to become a free, questioning and attentive individual. In her works, she clearly states that problems of women can only be solved by free, self-confident and questioning women and then emphasizes that this can only and only be achieved by education.In her works, the author focused on woman problem, family and marital relations, women?s thoughts on sexuality and political and historical transformation of women and examined these issues and problems in a comprehensive and detailed manner also working on the impacts and effects of locations and education on these issues. She used the women characters that she created and that are widely different from each other and depicted various conflicts in fiction and thus led to new questioning about problems of women. This study will allow us to observe how Adalet Ağaoğlu creates her women characters and which variables she uses in actualizing these characters and intrinsic aptitude of women characters, the relation between education-women and society and Ağaoğlu?s perspective and approach to woman problem.Duygu GÖRENMay, 2008
