Investigation of occupational health and safety risk assessment status in adana provincial health institutions

Background and Aim The healthcare sector is a collection of services consisting of specialized businesses in different fields, involving labor intensive processes, many risks encountered and services that need to be presented continuously throughout the day. This sector is a service sector that has similar risks as well as each institution has its own risks. In 2012, together with the "Health and Safety Law", the provision of occupational health and safety at workplaces has become a legal obligation to conduct "Risk Assessment" in order to improve existing health and safety conditions. The aim of this study is to determine the risk assessment studies and characteristics for Health and Safety in Adana province center health institutions and to investigate the measures against risks in institutions. Material and Methods: This study was carried out in Adana province; Provincial Health Directorate, Public Health Services Presidency, Public Hospitals Services Presidency, Emergency Health Services Presidency and units attached to these institutions. Participation in the survey was based on volunteerism and a total of 210 establishments were interviewed face to face between January and May 2018 and questionnaires were applied. Workplace information, OSH services information and risk assessment cases of the participating units were questioned. Frequency tables and chi-square test were used for descriptive distributions as statistical analysis. p˂0,05 was considered significant. Results: It was determined that 58.7% of the health institutions were subcontracted, 75.7% had employee representatives, 24.8% were union organizations, and 12.9% were OHS units. It was determined that 97.6% of the participating institutions reported job accidents, near miss incidents and occupational diseases, 97.6% reported contact with blood-body fluids with cutting piercer injuries. It has been determined that 95.2% of Adana provincial health institutions conduct risk assessment studies. In terms of risk assessment of the institutions participating in the research, it was found that there is no difference between private and publicly owned organizations.(p=0,96) It has been determined that risk assessment applications have been made one time in 70% of the institutions evaluated for risk, twice in 27%, and more than twice in 3%. Al the same time, as a result of the risk assessment, the proportion of the health institutions that complete their deficiencies is 43%. Conclusion: In our research, occupational health and about the safety, although very new legislation in Turkey, they adapt to the new situation of institutions and practitioners, and Adana in general where a high proportion of the risk assessment, but it is determined that less than half of the missing their fix.
