Health literacy status in women who had new birth in a state hospital in seyhan district of Adana Province and health results on mother and new born research

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the level of health literacy of women who had recently given birth in a state hospital in Seyhan, Adana and to evaluate the health outcomes of the mother and the newborn. Materıals and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. The study included 345 women who were newly admitted to Adana Gynecology and Obstetrics and Gynecology outpatient clinics in Adana province. During January-July 2018, a face-to-face interview was conducted. Sociodemographic information and Turkey health literacy contained. Frequency tables and chi-square test were used as statistical analysis. P <0.05 was considered significant. Results: The mean age of women was 27.54 ± 5.86 years. While 4.6% of women (16) did not complete primary education, 71.9% (248) completed primary education, 23.5% (81) graduated from a high school or higher school. 69.3% (239) of the participants had inadequate health literacy. 14.5% (50) had problematic, 9.6% (33) had sufficient, while 6.7% (23) had excellent health literacy. Age, education level, grandmother education status, family type, place of residence, material income, working status, caffeine in pregnancy, use of herbal tea, health service use characteristics and pregnancy education were found to be significant relationship with health literacy. Conclusion: Health literacy is a concept that has become very important with the emerging disease burden, is well below the desired level in Turkey. In particular, the health literacy situation of women is also important because it affects the whole family and priority should be given to raising the health literacy levels.
