The validity and reliability of Alzheimer?s Disease Cooperative Study-Activities of Daily Living (ADCS-ADL) Scale In Turkish Community

Scientific Background: Daily living activity scales are essential in monitoring the patients with dementia, and in evaluating the effects of treatments. The scale of Alzheimer?s Disease Cooperative Study-Activities of Daily Living (ADCS-ADL), developed by Alzheimer Disease Study group, is a scale of evaluating performances of patients with AD both in basic and instrumental daily living activities. Further, the scale has a widespread usage in AD studies.Material and Method: 32 patients with Alzheimer?s Disease, fulfilling NINCDS-ADRDA criteria of probable AD who were in 1-2-3 stage according to the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR); 10 probable demented patients (mild cognitive impairment) who were in 0.5 stage in CDR; and 31 non-demented control subjects with similar age, gender and educational status were examined for the study. For all the subjects, the ADCS-ADL, Modified ADL (MADL), Modified Instrumental ADL (MIADL), Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) and finally Global Deterioration Scale (GDS) scales have been applied. Adas-Cog scale has been applied to the demented and probable demented subjects additionally. Finally, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, differential validity and concurrent validity have been analyzed statistically.Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate the validity and reliability of the Turkish adaptation of ADCS-ADL in Turkish society and to enable the widespread usage of it in our country with the AD related studies.Results: The ADCS-ADL has diffirentiated AD group from normal and probable demented groups significantly. Additionally, it has been found sensitive to the dementia stages (p:0.01). In addititon to this, a significant correlation has been established between the ADCS-ADL scores of AD group and MMSE (r:0.736), CDR(r:0.758), CDR Total(0.828), GDS(r:0.743), MADL(r0.826) and MIADL(r:0826) groups. The correlation with ADAS-Cog has measured in low levels. The internal consistency values have measured as ?:0.937 for AD group, ?:0.719 for probable demented group and ?:0.758 for control group. Test-retest reliability has given high score where ICC:0.998.Conclusion: This study suggests that, the Turkish adaptation of ADCS-ADL is a valid and reliable scale in monitoring patients with Alzheimer?s Disease in our society.
