The effects of adenotonsillectomy on bleeding parameters and early humoral immunity

Adenotonsillectomy is one of the most frequent procedures, performed by otorhinolaryngologists. Today postoperative hemorrhage is thought to be the most important complication of adenotonsillectomy. Prediction of the children who will get posttonsillectomy hemorrhage and close follow up of the risky group can prevent unpleasant results of hemorrhage. The aim of our study is to investigate the effect of adenotonsillectomy on early postoperatiferative humoral immunity and bleeding parameters.Twenty children who underwent adenotonsillectomy, at Duzce University ENT Department, between July 2007 and December 2007 were included into the study. Blood samples for IgG, IgA, IgM, C3, PT, aPTT, INR and complete blood count were taken from the children underwent adenotonsillectomy, at preoperative 1. day, postoperative 1. day and postoperative 8. day.There were significant differences among the mean values of the immunoglobulins and C3 in postoperative 1.day, postoperative 8.day and preoperative 1. day. There were also significant differences among the mean values of the PT, aPTT, INR, thrombocyte, Hb, WBC in postoperative 1. day, postoperative 8. day and preoperative 1. day.In conclusion we found that adenotonsillectomy seems to have some effects on early postoperative humoral immunity and perhaps because of this or because of direct effects of adenotonsillectomy bleeding parameter levels change.
