Özet (EN)

Hirsutism, a common clinical condition that can occur in women of any age, is characterized by male pattern of body hair, caused by excessive growth of terminal hair follicles in androgen-sensitive areas. Hirsutism is an extremely distressing condition that adverse impact on the psychosocial development of women of all ages. Both the low rates of seeing a physician due to omission or embarrassment of the patients, and the difficulties surrounding the diagnosis and treatment of patients who did consult a physician, cause the rates of success to remain below the desirable level. In Turkey, adequate studies are not available to indicate the prevalence or incidence of hirsutism in adolescent women. This study aims to show the distribution of the causes of hirsutism in our region and provide information on the incidence rates of rare diseases that cause hirsutism, with a view to increasing awareness of those conditions. Among female patients aged 10 to 18 years who presented with excessive body hair at the Outpatient Clinic of Pediatric Endocrinology, School of Medicine, Bezmialem Vakif University over the period of June 2011 – June 2014, 138 who were diagnosed with hirsutism were included in the study, and classified based on demographics, physical examination findings, and laboratory and imaging examination results. Patients diagnosed with hirsutism were etiologically classified in four groups: functional ovarian hyperfunction (polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and the others), idiopathic hyperandrogenism, idiopathic hirsutism (IH) and functional adrenal hyperandrogenism. In this study, of the 138 patients who presented with hirsutism at our hospital 72.4% had functional ovarian hyperfunction, 10.9% had idiopathic hyperandrogenism, 8% had functional adrenal hyperfunction, 7.2% had idiopathic hirsutism, 0.7% had CAH, and 0.7% had prolactinoma, which is consistent with the literature. As a result, in the adolescent age group girls in our region, the most common cause of the etiology of hirsutism has been found PCOS, which is consistent with the literature. It has been seen that the other reasons such as prolactinoma and late on set CAH, which are more rare causes, may have a role at the etiology of hirsutism in our region.
