The relationship between scoliosis severity, scoliosis perception and quality of life in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis

Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Dr Öznur BÜYÜKTURAN Scoliosis is a term that describes disorders of the shape of the vertebral column. Clinically it causes a lateral curvature of more than 10 ° in the frontal plane and rotational distortion in the horizontal plane, while the kyphosis and lordosis, which are the anatomical curvatures of the sagittal plane, generally cause deterioration in the flattening direction. The idiopathic scoliosis (IS), which is a structural and unknown etiology of scoliosis that can develop due to many causes, constitutes 75-80% of all scoliosis types. Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a type of İS, occurring in the period from the onset of puberty until the growth plaques close and is the most common type of idiopathic scoliosis. Increased scoliosis levels of patients with AIS may cause significant differences in visual perceptions and quality of life. Etiologically, spinal deformity caused by AIS can be defined as a symptom of a syndrome with multifactorial etiology. The aim of this study was to determine the degree of curvature, visual deformity perception, quality of life, depression level, pain, limb lengths, chest circumference measurements and respiratory frequency of patients with AIS and to investigate the relationship between these values. sixty-nine patients who applicant to the Orthopedics and Traumatology Clinic of Kırşehir Ahi Evran University Education and Research Hospital and with Lenke type 1 curves who were diagnosed with adölescant idiopathic scoliosis were included in the study. Sociodemographic data, extremity length measurements, chest circumference measurements, respiratory values were recorded. In addition, the degree of curvature was determined by Cobb method, visual deformity perceptions by Walter Reed Visual Evaluation Scale, quality of life by Scoliosis Research Society -22 questionnaire, depression levels by Child Depression İnventory, and Pain evaluations by Visual Analogue Scale. While there was a statistically significant correlation between Cobb scores and SRS-22 quality of life score, WRVAS score, CDİ values and VASI score of the adolescents included in the study (p <005), there was no statistically significant correlation was found between Cobb scores and VASG and VASA. (p> 0.05), there was also a statistically significant positive correlation between SRS-22 Quality of Life score and both VASI and WRVAS (p <005), while there was no statistically significant relationship between SRS-22 and VASG, VASA and CDI. There was no statistically significant relationship between WRVAS and VASI, VASA and VASG (p> 0.05). It was found in this study that AIS affects vertebral alignment as well as quality of life, perceived body alignment, pain and depression level.
