The relationship between internet gaming disorder and chronotype and sleeping problems i̇n adolescents

Abstract (EN)

Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of Internet gaming disorder (IGD) in adolescents and to examine the relationship between IGD and chronotype and sleep problems. Material and Method: The research was conducted with 660 adolescents aged 12-18 years. The socio-demographic data and internet gaming habits of the participants were evaluated by using the "Socio-demographic Information and Gaming Habits Questionnaire" created by the researchers. IGD was evaluated by using the "Internet Gaming Disorder Scale Short Form", sleep rhythm were evaluated by the "Children's Daily Rhythm Determination Scale", and sleep habits were evaluated by the "Child Sleeping Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ)". Results: The prevalence of IGD was determined to be 4.7%. The mean age of the IGD group was 14.7, the mean age of the control group was 14.9, and there was no significant difference between the groups, in terms of the mean age. In the IOOB group, 48.4% of the adolescents were girls and 51.6% were boys and in the control group 60.3% were girls and 39.7% were boys. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of gender. It was determined that a history of psychiatric disease in the mother and/or father was found to be significantly higher in the IGD group compared to the control group. The mean subscale scores of CHSQ including "Bedtime Resistance", "Sleep Time", "Parasomnias", "Disruption of Breathing During Sleep", and "Daytime Sleepiness" were significantly higher in the IGD group compared to the control group. The rate of evening chronotype was significantly higher in the IGD group compared to the control group, while intermediate chronotype was found to be significantly higher in the control group compared to the IGD group. Conclusion: The results of his study reveal that IGD is significantly common in the 12-18 age range, especially in male adolescents and that parental psychopathology, sleep problems, and evening chronotype are associated with IGD. In this study, the direction of the relationship between ID and individual-familial characteristics and sleep problems was not clearly evaluated, and further studies are needed to determine the direction of this relationship.
