11 SUMMARY Masters Thesis THE REMOVAL OF S02 FROM FLUE GASES BY SORPTION Mehtap DEMİR Fırat University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Environmental Engineering 1995, Page: 34 Air pollution is seen as an important problem in urban regions in winter months. The most important reason ofpollution is fuels which are consumed for producing domestic heat. Because of burning of burnable sulphure which is found in the chemical structure of solid and liquid fuels, sulphur dioxide is discharged to urban atmosphere about twice amount of burnable sulphur. In this study, with the purpose of reduction the sulphur dioxide emissions which is discharged to atmosphere, dry bed filters are tested for sorption the sulphur dioxide from flue gas that occurs from fired fuels in stoves and boilers for materials. The effects of sorption materials, length of column and the amount of sulphur dioxide flown through toe column on the sorption rate of sulphur dioxide are investigated under 90 °C column temperature condition. At the end of this study, it is seen that fly ash used as adsorbtion material has the most effect on the sorption rate. ; - *- Key Words: Air pollution, sulphur dioxide, adsorbtion, desulphuraation.
