A new device-to-device discovery algorithm based on throughput in mobile networks for post-disaster communication

Abstract (EN)

Communication is important in the event of a disaster, as well as communication between people and effective communication between disaster management institutions after a disaster is vital. After the disaster, the communication network may be physically damaged or the communication network collapsed due to excessive call traffic. Device-to-device (D2D) discovery and D2D communication ensure communication services in such difficult situations, without the need for communication network substructure and by decreasing call traffic in cellular communication networks. Given that almost everybody uses a mobile device (UE-user equipment) today, the D2D communication technique is seen as a suitable solution for the post-disaster situation. This method plays a substantial role in LTE and especially in fifth-generation communication (5G) networks. Device or UE discovery, is a key element in D2D communications. It is not possible for devices to communicate with each other, without device discovery. In this study, the Throughput-based Discovery Algorithm (TDA) is recommended to find D2D matches among devices on Public Safety Network (PSN) in a post-disaster situation. Sample scenarios were composed to test the performance of the proposed algorithm. TDA was compared with SINR (signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio)-based discovery algorithms, such as Shortest Distance Discovery Algorithm (SDA), Maximum SINR with No limit on the distance of discovery Algorithm (MSNA), and Maximum SINR with Limit on the distance of discovery Algorithm (MSLA). The proposed algorithm TDA was observed to outperform other SINR-based discovery (MSNA, SDA, and MSLA) algorithms for D2D discovery in the calamity area in terms of failure to service or outage of SINR and the average number of SINR pairs discovered. Within the scope of the thesis, a Matlab GUI called PSN-D2D Discovery Simulator has been developed to enter different parameters with the help of a single interface with SINR-based discovery algorithms and to view the results from a single interface. The results obtained from parameters such as different path loss and environmental impact values with the discovery algorithms of D2D and PSN networks with different scenarios were evaluated in the simulator.
