Evaluation of the effect of the preparedness of mukhtars on their work in disasters, February 6, 2023 earthquakes (Example of Istanbul province)

This study aims to understand the impact of disaster preparedness of Istanbul mukhtars on their work after the February 6, 2023 earthquakes. Disasters are events that threaten the security and welfare of society, disrupt the flow of normal life, cause serious loss of life and property, and their effects are generally large-scale and complex. Therefore, complete disaster preparedness and effective response are critical. Mukhtars, as a fundamental part of local governments, are people who can communicate directly with the society and understand the needs in the best way, and are also known and elected by the residents of the neighborhood. In case of disaster, mukhtars perform critical duties such as ensuring public safety, identifying needs and coordinating emergency aid services. In addition, mukhtars also contribute to preventive activities such as informing the society before and after disasters, organizing trainings and raising awareness about disasters. Therefore, the role and effectiveness of mukhtars in the disaster management process is an important factor affecting the society's resistance to disasters and the recovery process. In this research, the contributions and effectiveness of , mukhtars' disaster preparedness work were evaluated. The population of the study consists of a total of 963 mukhtars in Istanbul province. A minimum of 275 mukhtars were determined for sample selection. The dependent variable of the research is the effect of mukhtars on disaster preparedness activities. Independent variables include the participation level of muhtars, such as their sociodemographic information and their activities in their work. A survey form and scale were used as data collection tools. The survey form was designed to cover topics such as mukhtars' preparation efforts for disasters, educational status, disaster awareness and participation level. The scale was used to evaluate the disaster preparedness level of mukhtars. SPSS software was used for statistical analysis of the collected data, and these analyzes were used to reveal the effects and relationships of mukhtars on disaster preparedness studies.
