Evaluation of the motivations of volunteers in non-society organizations established for the purpose of intervention in disaster

Disasters are the areas where the concept of volunteering, with all its definitions, is most clearly observed. Disaster volunteering, unlike other types of volunteering, requires long-term, continuous training in different fields. Determining the factors that affect the motivation of volunteers is vital for the creation and sustainability of disaster-resistant societies. This research was conducted to determine the factors affecting the motivation of individuals who volunteer in associations established to respond to disasters in the Marmara region. The research is a cross-sectional descriptive type and was conducted between February and November 2023 in the Human Rights and Freedoms Foundation (IHH), Neighborhood Disaster Volunteers Emergency Response Team (MAG-AME), United Search and Rescue Association (BKSAR) and Motorcycle Search and Rescue Support Association (MAKUD). It was carried out with 473 volunteers. In the research, data were collected with the Survey participant information form consisting of 17 questions containing the sociodemographic information of the participants and the Volunteer Motivation Inventory consisting of 10 sub-dimensions consisting of 44 questions. Data were analyzed with SPSS 25.0 program. The average age of the volunteers participating in the study was 39.62±10.59, 70.8% (n=335) were male, 62.4% (n=295) were married, 21.4% (n=101) It was found that 1 child, 38.3% (n=181) had a bachelor's degree and 34.5% (n=163) were private sector employees. While 70.2% (n=332) of the participants reported that they had experienced a disaster before, it was found that 74.2% (n=351) did not have any losses in disasters. When the data of the research is evaluated, the total volunteering motivation of men is higher than that of women (156.97), the total volunteering motivation of those who have experienced a disaster before is higher than those who have not experienced a disaster (157.65), and the total volunteering motivation according to the association is MAKUD (161.77). It was observed that the total motivation of volunteers who were previously members of another disaster association was higher (160.96) than volunteers who were not members.
