Abstract (EN)

As a result of examining the relations of landslides and surface mining, it is concluded that applied engineering solutions do not completely prevent the formation of landslides and it is imperative to observe the displacement movements. Slope stability analysis is one of the most important research subjects in surface mining activities and in this context, the stability of all natural or artificial slopes under their own weight and the applied loads are analyzed. This is due to the fact that the landslides that occur due to the lack of slope stability can cause serious loss of life and property similar to natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods. In this thesis, the monitoring of surface mining, slope stability, landslides and deformations related to landslides by Gb-InSAR (Ground Based Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) system are discussed and concluded that with this system, early warnings can be taken from observation resulting in prevention accidents leading loss of lives. The Gb-InSAR system works in the same sense as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems that can be positioned in air and in space, and makes use of the phase difference of two SAR images and allows the determination of displacements. With Ground-Based Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (GB-InSAR), surface deformations such as earthquakes, volcanic movements, glacial movements, landslides, etc. can be easily monitored. Thanks to a monitoring activity using the GB-InSAR (Ground Based Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) system, it is possible to observe landslide kinematics, design risk reduction and emergency security measures, and long-term stability studies. Observation of displacement movements by GB-InSAR technique can provide cost and time saving in engineering projects and can be used without compromising security. In this way, both the design and plan changes for the emergency phase play an important and active role in the monitoring activities. Being the largest surface mining site in Turkey, western slope of Kışlaköy Sector in Afşin Elbistan Lignites (Kahramanmaraş) is continuously monitored with GB-InSAR system located on a stable point 3 km away. Even though a movement that may occur in this slope cannot be stopped, it is monitored by the GB-InSAR system to prevent threats to work and life safety. Displacements are observed and early warning systems are implemented accordingly.
