Evaluation of meningiom cases operated at neurosurgery clinic of Afyonkarahisar HEALTH Sciences University Faculty of Medicine: A retrospective study

Objective: Astrocytes are the defense cells of the central nervous system. Different morphological types and anaplastic types of astrocytomas can coexist. Astrocytomas arise from astrocytes. Gliablostoma multiforme is the most common astrocytic tumor in the adult age group and has a high mortality rate. Of the cases who applied to our hospital with the diagnosis of astrocytoma and were operated; Aim of this study is to compare and discuss the results, including age, gender, etiological features, admission complaints, pathological classification, postoperative follow-up, surveillance and mortality, retrospectively with the current results in the literature. Materials and Methods: This study included 65 patients who were admitted to Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Neurosurgery, between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2021 with the diagnosis of astrocytoma and operated. As a result of the Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) taken when the patients were admitted to the hospital and the pathology samples taken during the operation, the preoperative and postoperative status of each patient was examined. The results obtained as a result of the examinations were evaluated statistically. Results: The diagnosis of 53 (80.3%) patients was glioblastoma. When all 65 patients were classified; There were 4 (6.2%) Grade I, 3 (4.6%) Grade II, 3 (4.6%) Grade III, 55 (84.62%) Grade IV patients. In the postoperative period, only radiotherapy was applied to 12 (18.5%) patients, chemotherapy alone to 9 (13.84%) patients, and chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment to 40 (61.5%) patients. When compared in terms of their diagnoses, mortality was statistically higher in patients with glioblastoma compared to other diagnoses (p<0.001). Conclusion: As a result of the study, no statistically significant difference was found between mortality and the patients who used radiotherapy or chemotherapy alone.
