Evaluation of the knowledge level and behavioral patterns of individuals living in Afyonkarahisar regarding Brucellosis

Objective: In our study, we aimed to evaluate whether the people of Afyonkarahisar have sufficient knowledge about brucellosis and to raise their awareness. Our goal was to assess the level of knowledge regarding brucellosis, which is commonly seen in our region, and to use the findings to pave the way for necessary preventive measures Materials and Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional survey study was conducted between April 15, 2025, and August 15, 2025, in Afyonkarahisar, with a total of 534 participants from 11 family health centers, including those located in the city center and affiliated towns. The data collection form included questions assessing sociodemographic characteristics and knowledge related to brucellosis, and it was administered through face-to-face interviews. Statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS 26 software package, and a p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Individuals over the age of 40, those with undergraduate or higher education, those with medium or high income levels, livestock workers, and civil servants reported having heard of brucellosis at higher rates. Participants over 40 years of age, male individuals, those residing in villages or towns, and livestock workers reported higher rates of having contracted brucellosis. Individuals aged 40–59, those with undergraduate or higher education, those whose income was equal to or greater than their expenses, livestock workers, and civil servants more frequently stated that brucellosis is transmitted through raw milk. Male individuals, those residing in villages or towns, those whose income exceeded their expenses, and those whose occupation was livestock farming more frequently indicated that boiling milk can prevent the transmission of brucellosis. Conclusion: In conclusion, the findings of our study, consistent with other research in the literature, indicate that public awareness of brucellosis has not yet reached the desired level. Among individuals who reported having knowledge about brucellosis, the proportion of correct information was low, with notable gaps particularly regarding transmission routes, vaccination, and preventive measures. This situation highlights the importance of expanding community-based educational programs and strengthening awareness activities through primary healthcare services in order to achieve effective control of the disease.
