Abstract (EN)
SUMMARY In this study, a "reading" of Ottoman-Turkish modernization history wanted to be examined. Throughout this "reading"; what distinctive features of this modernization process are, which kind of dynamics it is based on, what its contradictions and benefits are and finally the specific dimensions it inherits us are analysed. 19th century in which the renewal movements are increased and the foundation years of Turkish Republic and the construction period are especially considered as the time period of this study. In this reading process, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar's works are chosen as the "object". The context and the scope which were considered in Tanpinar's works and any other of his productions (essays, history of literature, articles, mails, memories and etc) were considered to be very important-source in reaching this study's aim. Tanpinar's works are tried to be evaluated from the point of historical, sociological and intellectual aspects (modernization which we think that it's related with our subject and civilization, culture, identity, history, time, philosophy etc. as they are relevant with the topic) Tanpinar is chosen for this study as he's best suitable figure and personality for 'reading'; this is the practical reason for the study. First, it was tried to be put forward what is understood from the concept of modernization, modernity and modernism which are frequently used throughout the study. Secondly Ottoman-Turkish modernization process' historical-sociological dimension were exemined. And finally, the reflections of this process on Tanpinar's works described by civilization-culture changes, time and identity.
