Abstract (EN)

Ill TECHNICAL PROPERTIES OF WOOD AND WOOD BASED FLOOR COVERING MATERIALS (PARQUET) (Ph. D. Thesis) Nihat DONGEL GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY February 2005 ABSTRACT In this study, technical properties of solid wood and wood based floor covering materials were investigated. For this aim, totally 9 types samples were prepared from beech (Fagus orientalis L.) solid wood parquet covered with polyurethane varnish, 4 types laminated wood parquets which have different layer materials (solid wood, MDF and plywood) covered with UV cured polyurethane varnish, 4 types laminated parquets which have different core layers (HDF, MDF, particleboard and plywood). Samples were tested by the standard test methods such as; moisture content (TS 2471 and TS EN 322), density (TS 2470 and TS EN 323/1), thickness swelling, width swelling and water uptake (TS EN 318), dimensional changes (TS EN 318), modulus of elasticity (TS EN 310), impact resistance (TS 1770), Brinell hardness (TS 139), resistance to surface wear, resistance to scratch, resistance to cigarette burns, resistance to dry heat (TS EN 438-2), sound absorption coefficients (ASTM C384-04) and color changes (TS 8106-2 Iso 4892-2). Furthermore, transmission of sound and sound resistance data have been calculated as mathematically. Results indicated that if a material has high level water uptake, it shows more thickness swelling. Value of width swelling, transmission of sound and modulus of elasticity were determined lower level in laminated wood parquet and laminated parquet than solid wood parquet High density materials have more durability against impactIV effect Color of all surfaces were changed by UV, but these changes were obtained as lower at laminated parquets. Although cigarette burns didn't affect laminated parquet surfaces, it caused some defects on solid wood surfaces. The color and gloss of surfaces were changed by dry heat, but the least changes were determined on laminated sample surfaces.
