AIBU. İzzet Baysal Faculty of Medicine Hospital, Distribution of Thyroid Diseases in Patients Having Applied to Internal Diseases Polyclinic in 2007.

ABSTRACTBolu province is an endemic iodine deficiency area. The aim of this thesis is to assess the frequency of thyroid diseases in Bolu.The files of the patients applying to Internal Diseases Department Polyclinic in 2007 were screened retrospectively and 1550 cases from Bolu province were included in the scope of the study.This study revealed that the thyroid diseases are at a high rate in Bolu (34,8%). With Thyroid USG, 17 % goiter was determined Subclinical hyperthyroidism, the most frequently observed thyroid disease, was found to be at a rate of 9.7%. It was also found that the rate of subclinical hyperthyroidism and overt hyperthyroidism increased and hypothyroidism and subclinical hypothyroidism decreased in patients older than 65 years.The findings are in favor of iodine deficiency diseases. Iodine deficiency disease is a preventable public health problem. Efforts to educate people and raise awareness on consumption of iodine need to be increased. As the risk to expose to iodine deficiency of the people decreases, the frequency of the iodine deficiency diseases will also decrease in the following years.Keywoords: Hyperthyroidism, Hypothyroidism, İyot Deficiency.
