Their unique structure brings advantages as well as disadvantages. The transfer of certain standards to the enterprise in order to adapt to changes in the environment of the enterprise can be defined as institutionalization. In this study, it is aimed to determine the factors related to institutionalization in family businesses and to propose solutions. The research was conducted in 58 family-owned enterprises operating in Istanbul Tuzla Organized Industry and İkitelli Esenler Cooperative between January-February 2019. This is a descriptive study. In this research, family businesses mostly operate in Construction, Service and Plastic industry, respectively. Half of the enterprises have been in operation for more than 13 years and 79.3% (n = 46) are Limited Liability companies. In the research, ownership is "Single family member" in 39.7% of family businesses and "sister partnership" in 31.0%. 86.2% of the companies are 1st generation family businesses and 44.8% of them are between 0-40 employees. In this study, it is determined that institutionalization and planning & supervision mechanisms are higher in family businesses that have old age, high turnover and number of employees, fully owned family members and working together in 1st and 2nd generation. Sustainability is one of the most important problems of family businesses. The solution of these structural and managerial problems of family businesses can only be possible with the institutionalization of the enterprise. As the family businesses progress towards institutionalization, they will become more successful and developing and will grow successfully.
