Type 2 diabetes risk among academicians: South-Eastern Turkey sample

This descriptive research was conducted to determine academicians', who work at the universities in South-Eastern Turkey, type 2 diabetes risk score. The research population consist of 6904 academicians who registered in Council of Higher Education in year 2017. The sample consists of 479 academicians who participated in survey via emails. This research was conducted as WEB based application and no printed material used for the survey. Data were collected via using Personal Attributes Questionnaire, Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC) and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows v.25. Findings were presented as frequency and percentage values with Spearman's Correlations analysis, Mann-Whitney U Test and Kruskal-Wallis Test. Findings about participants: 27,77% of them were younger than 30-year, 61,38% of them are men, 65,14% of them are married, 56,78% of them had BMI score lower than 25. It was noted that there was an significant and negative relationship between FINDRISC and IPAQ scores (r=-,282, p<,001). While there were significant relationship between BMI value and waist circumference with FINDRISC and IPAQ scores (p<,001), there were no significant relationship between Daily sleep duration with FINDRISC and IPAQ scores (p>,05). In conclusion, as the age of participants increases, physical activity level is decrease and risk for type 2 diabetes is increases; the daily sleep duration has no effects on diabetes risk score; working far from place where lived for the longest time increases diabetes risk score, BMI and waist circumference affect diabetes risk scores; smoking and using alcohol have no effects on diabetes risk score but physical activity level.
