Abstract (EN)
The phenomenon of old age and the aging process affect individuals in various aspects, including psychological, physical, economic, and sociological dimensions. In addition to individuals' perspectives on old age, how they experience this process is of great importance. In this study, first, the conceptual framework of the aging process and the phenomenon of old age are discussed. Subsequently, the concept of academia and the development of academia in Türkiye are theoretically examined. The subject of the research is how academicians experience aging. The aim of the study is to understand the aging process of academicians aged 60 and over, how they interpret and define old age, and the essence of their experiences. To achieve this aim, phenomenology, one of the qualitative research designs, was employed. The study examines the aging experiences of academicians aged 60 and over who continue to work at Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University. A total of 36 academicians, 7 female and 29 male, participated in the study. Data were obtained through face-to-face interviews using an interview form containing open-ended and closed-ended questions. The study investigates how participants define old age, their metaphors for old age, what first comes to mind regarding old age, their feelings while aging, how they age in academia, their thoughts on elderly care, and their retirement processes. Participants defined old age as maturity and experience. According to the academicians, aging is an experience shaped by wisdom and productivity, filled with the desire to continue contributing to society. This journey, enriched by experience and productivity, is like a valuable library. Although it may wear out physically over time, as long as the knowledge and experience within it exist, that library continues to remain the most precious treasure for society.
