THE REVISION OF FRITILLARIA L. (LILIACEAE) GENUS IN MEDITERRANEAN REGION (TURKEY) (Ph. D. Thesis) Mehtap TEKŞEN GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY May 2004 ABSTRACT This study comprises the identification, description and geographical distribution as well as certain morphological, palinologkal, cytological and moleculer properties of the species belonging to the genus Fritillaria collected from Mediterranean region in Turkey. In Mediterranean region, while the numbers of the Fritillaria represented by 22 taxa according to Flora of Turkey, it is now evaluated under 23 taxa as a result of this study. In this work, two new species (Fritillaria milasense M. Tekşen & Aytaç and F. mughlae M. Tekşen & Aytaç) are also described for the science. F. sororum K. Persson & J. Persson was reduced to synonym of F. acmopetala Boiss. subsp. acmopetala; F. armena Boiss., F. zagrica Stapf and F. baskilensis Behçet were reduced to synonyms of F. pinardii Boiss. In addition F. carica Rix subsp. serpenticola Rix was evaluated as F. serpenticola (Rix) M. Tekşen & Aytaç. Phylogenetic order F. forbesii Rix and F. kittaniae Sorger in Flora of Turkey were changed using morphological, palinological, cytological and moleculer data. F. crassifolia Boiss. & Huet. subsp. crassifolia was suggested as a Irano-Turanian phytogeographical element. Red list categories of taxa of Fritillaria were revised according to IUCN Red List Categories.
