Evaluation of burnout levels of research assistants working at Akdeniz University Hospital in the covid-19 pandemic

Introduction and Aim: Burnout is common in professions where face-to-face intense relationships with people, such as physician. Physicians are at a serious risk in terms of both burnout and mental health. It is thought that the pandemic will increase burnout, especially among resident physicians that working in the front line. The aim of our study is to determine the burnout levels and the factors affecting this during the COVİD-19 pandemic in research assistants working at Akdeniz University Hospital. Material and Method: The universe of this study, which is planned in cross-sectional type, was composed of research assistants studying at Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine. Within the scope of the research, a total of 306 resident physicians who are studying specialty in the Departments of Internal and Surgical Medicine Departments participated in this study. The data were collected by applying face-to-face questionnaires to physicians who volunteered to participate in the study in the 1-month period between 01.06.2020 - 01.07.2020. Results: The total of 306 resident physicians participated in this study. Maslach Burnout Inventory emotional exhaustion mean score was 16,20±6,07; the mean score of depersonalization was 7,16±3,34 and the mean score of the personal accomplishment was 20,04±3,54. It was found that the scores of personal accomplishment were higher in male resident physicians compared to those female resident physicians. It was found that depersonalization scores of physicians with children were lower than without children. It was found that the scores of depersonalization were higher in resident physicians who were in the internal branch compared to those who were in the surgical branch. Conclusion: According to the results of our study, a low level of emotional exhaustion, a moderate level of depersonalization and a high level of burnout in terms of personal accomplishment were found in resident physicians. It is thought that taking measures such as regulating the working conditions of resident physicians, making improvements in their income levels and equal distribution of duties will have a positive effect on the prevention of burnout syndrome.
