Evaluation of the patient with the diagnosis of stroke admitted to the Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine Anaesthesia Intensive Care Unit between 2008-2013

Stroke is a major cause of death among elderly adults and a leading factor which cause disability. Privatization of treatment principles belong to stroke affects morbidity and mortality of this desease. In this study, 226 patients that admitted to Anaesthesia Intensive Care Unit in Akdeniz University Faculty of Medicine Department of Anaeshesiology and Reanimation between January 2008-January 2013 for the diagnos and the treatment of stroke enrolled. The patients were analyzed retrospectively. Mean age of patients was 62,0±16, mean GCS at the arrival was 7,9±3,5 and mean APACHE II skore was 22,5±6,6. 57,5% of the patients had died during the follow-up. GOS values were found statically lower in patients with lower GCS and higher APACHE II skores (p<0,0001). During follow-up, 65% of the patients had developed at least one medical complication. The most common complication was pneumonia. Lenght of stay in hospital and intensive care unit were found statically longer in patients who had developed pneumonia. The negative effect of the development of any complication on GOS was determinated as significally. 87% of patient were intubated and 43% had percutaneus tracheostomy. In this study, as similiar to the previous studies, duration of mechanical ventilation, lenght of stay in the hospital and in the intensive care unit in the early tracheostomy group were found statically shorter. Mortality was found statically higher in patients who had developed AKD during istensive care unit follow-up and patients who had insulin infusion because of hyperglycemia. Chronic AF was found as the only significant risk factor for the re-admission to the intensive care unit. Considering the prognostic factors provides the clinicians to inform the patients relatives correctly during the follow-up period. Based on this results, further studies are needed
