Objective The aim of this study is to assess the clinical practice of a psychiatry inpatient clinic of a university hospital during last 8 years and also to compare the results with existing findings of the literature. Method The data is collected from the records of hospital registration system and also the files of 737 (430 female, 295 male) patients who are hospitalized in psychiatry inpatient clinics of Akdeniz University Hospital between the 1st of January 2006 and 31st of August 2013. Results 737 (430 female, 295 male) subjects are attached to the study. The mean value of age was 59±14.8 (between 10 to 80 years old). The reference diagnostic distribution is defined according to ICD 10. The most prevalent three diagnosis were: Affective disorders 37.3% (n=271), schizophrenia, schizotypical and delusional disorders 30.7% and anxiety disorders 15.8% (n=115). These three most prevalent diagnostic classes consist of 83.8% of the entire subjects. The most prevalent diagnosis was schizophrenia, schizotypical and delusional disorders (35.6%) among male patients whereas the affective disorders (40.5%) were the leading cause of hospitalization among females. Regarding non-psychiatric co-morbidities endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases were the most remarkable groups. Concerning the treatment strategies polypharmacy was detected in 53.2% (n=379) of the subjects. Mono-therapeutic strategies were mostly frequent among schizophrenia, schizotypical and delusional disorders with the percentage of 37.4% (n=88). Polypharmaceutical strategies were mostly frequent among affective disorders with 38.5% (n=146) percentage. The leading indication of the ECT was also affective disorders (76.5%, n=52). The most frequently used group of medication was antipsychotics. The mean length of hospitalization was 19.94±17.70 days. The most considerable factors that affect the duration of hospitalization were the category of ICD diagnosis, treatment modality, alcohol use, number of suicide attempt and presence of psychiatric disorder family history. Discussion The present study demonstrated that it is important to hold the social and demographical data within the context of planning, developing and assessment of medical service. Contribution to the development of mental healthcare programs ongoing over all the country was the most important benefit of the study
