The effect of honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) venom and apamin on acute epilepsy

Insect poısons, have been used for many years in the treatment of various diseases. Honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) venom is also used in Traditional and Complementary Medicine in terms of its components, in the treatment of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases such as chronic pain, as well as diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, apart from neurodegenerative diseases. It is also used in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and multiple sclerosis (MS). Recent studies have shown the effects of honey bee venom on epilepsy, which is also a neuronal disorder. In this study, 2-3 months old male Sprague dawley rats (n=54) weighing 230±30 g were used to investigate the effect of honey bee venom on acute epilepsy. The animals, including the control group, were divided into 9 groups and the effects of honey bee venom and Apamin, a component of honeybee venom, on epilepsy were investigated. According to the results of the literature review, it is thought that bee venom inhibits epilepsy pathways and has potential antiepileptic properties because it takes part in the regulation of voltage-gated ion channels such as sodium, potassium and calcium channels. In our study, the effects of honey bee venom and Apamin on sugar levels in cells were also investigated.
